Newcastle Airport's operations director, Richard Knight, is swapping wings for wheels this weekend as he teams up for a cycling challenge in aid of the Alan Shearer Foundation.

The former RAF squadron leader is aiming to cycle the Coast 2 Coast route from Whitehaven to Tynemouth within a gruelling 10-hour time slot with airport colleagues Neil McIntyre, Andy Niven and fire station manager, Steve Armstrong.

"Not content with riding 130 miles, the challenge is to do it in the hours of daylight in one day. I think there is about 7,000 feet of up!" said Richard.

In May, Newcastle Airport's private jet facility chose The Alan Shearer Foundation as its adopted charity and since then has been fundraising for the charity through collections at the Samson Aviation terminal and hosting a special Community Open Day during the Sunderland Airshow in July.
