Chinese dragon at the Alan Shearer Centre

Visitors to the Alan Shearer Centre have been celebrating Chinese New Year – the Year of the Horse - which starts on Friday this week.

Members dropped in for a lunch of chicken chow mein and sweet and sour pork made by the Centre's new chef, Jordan Phillips. As the event coincided with his birthday Jordan, who was born in the Chinese Year of the Sheep, was sung a rendition of Happy Birthday to You by the appreciative diners.

The star of the show, though, was a six-foot long "dragon" which made its entry to the sound of instruments being played by the audience, some of whom had also been involved in the creature's construction during previous Live and Learn craft sessions.

After a cup of green tea there was the opportunity for everyone to do some Chinese-themed artwork and leave with some lucky red packets of chocolate coins for good fortune.
