A squad of bobbies on bikes have raised over £6,400 for the Alan Shearer Foundation to help disabled children and adults in the region.

Foundation fundraiser, Northumbria police officer, Keith Harbottle, enlisted the help of 20 colleagues from the force to take part in a challenge to ride the distance from Newcastle to Rio, 6,000 miles, on static bikes at the MetroCentre, Gateshead last weekend.

The funds are currently being counted and Keith, who has previously undertaken some solo events in aid of the Alan Shearer Centre for St Cuthberts Care under the name of Action4Smiles, says he was really proud of the team effort.

"I still can't believe that I got 20 people who aren't paid athletes to take part," he said.

Photos of the event which was kicked off by BBC Look North presenter, Jeff Brown, have been posted in a gallery on the Foundation's website.
