An inaugural netball tournament has raised over £500 for the Alan Shearer Foundation.

Eight netball teams from around the North East competed at the Sporting Club in Cramlington at the weekend in the new Alan Shearer Foundation Cup tournament.

The contest was the idea of Concordia Netball Club A-Team Captain, Sarah Croft, who is set to take part in this year's Great North Run in aid of the Foundation. Sarah, along with team coach, Gemma White, organised the tournament to help raise funds and awareness of their entries into the run on 13 September.

"Local businesses were very supportive in giving prizes for the raffle," said Sarah. "Thank you to all the teams who took part in the tournament and to everyone who has given their support. I hope this tournament will be the first of an annual event to help raise funds for the Foundation," she said.

Congratulations go to the Gateshead Stadium Netball Club, the overall winners of the cup. The other teams competing were: Astley, Bedlington, Concordia, Dancing Flames, Great Park, KATS and Wansbeck.
