Making the friendship tree

There's a very special tree being nurtured at our Alan Shearer Activity Centre as members of our Live and Learn skills sessions for adults with disabilities get creative around the theme of friendship.

Centre recreation assistant, Jan Rootham, recently got the art project underway by painting a giant tree trunk and bare branches, and now everyone attending the sessions is helping it to blossom by adding some very special artwork.

By drawing round their hands, each person is creating the 'leaves' of the tree which they can colour or decorate any way they wish. Each leaf represents the friendships that have been formed between those attending the sessions at the Centre.

"Eventually, the tree will be in full bloom," said Jan. "It's a lovely theme to celebrate the friendships made here and exciting to watch it grow and flourish as we look forward to spring."
