Activity Centre garden begins to bear fruit

May 2012

The charity's green fingered market gardeners Martin Broomfield and Sean Hudson are well on their way to a successful year producing fresh fruit, vegetables, herbs and spices.

Inside the greenhouse seedlings include herbs both native and exotic, broccoli, cabbage, peppers, chilli, tomatoes, courgettes and flowers which will be planted in the gardens of the Activity Centre.

Planted out already Martin and Sean are growing spring onions, potatoes, carrots, radishes and onions to name but a few. They are now hoping to avoid late frosts and plant out many of the seedlings in early June.

"The garden is well on its way to success," said Martin. "Planning permission for the greenhouse took longer than anticipated because the site is located on the Roman Vallum but we're pleased to say everything is up and running"

Martin and Sean are always on the look-out for fit and willing volunteers to help keep the garden in tip top condition. Please contact Nicola Milne at St Cuthberts Care's head office on 0191 228 0111 or you can view more information about what is entailed for more information.
