Alan Shearer Activity Centre welcomes more volunteers

October 2012

Many thanks to the eight volunteers from the Department for Work and Pensions who put in a hard day's work at the Alan Shearer Activity Centre recently. They had signed up for the DWP's 'Community Ten Thousand' scheme which will free up members of its staff to do ten thousand hours work in local communities this year.

The volunteers arrived at the Activity Centre raring to go and were immediately put to work taking down a huge marquee that had been used to host a recent fundraising event. Dismantling and putting it away warmed them up for their real work of the day which was to use their gardening skills in the newly established market garden on the site. They all agreed that it was a very worthwhile project and, although it was hard work, they thoroughly enjoyed getting involved in such a good cause.

Activity Centre Manager, Jennifer Taylor, thanked the volunteers, gave them a tour of the Centre and explained how the help of volunteers makes a big difference to the lives of the disabled children and adults.

If you are interested in volunteering, not just at the Alan Shearer Activity Centre, but for any of St Cuthberts Care's services and projects, please contact Nicola Milne on 0191 228 0111 or email

Thanks to the volunteers from DWP
