Swapping spreadsheets for shovels has been a breath of fresh air for volunteers at the Alan Shearer Centre gardens.

A team of finance office workers from the Department of Work and Pensions in Newcastle has spent some time tackling the weeds in the overgrown garden trail as part of the organisation’s Community 10,000 volunteer hours project.

“As a team we can’t explain how invaluable this time away from the office is – it gave us time to talk to each other as human beings and time to bond together as a team," said DWP team member Emma McIlvenny.

“The work that the Alan Shearer Centre does is amazing and is a credit to the North East. It makes you put into perspective the work we do in Finance …,” she added.
