Alan Shearer opening the Centre

The Alan Shearer Activity Centre will be seven years old this week.

The Centre was officially opened by Alan Shearer on 11 May 2007 after he donated £320,000, including Gift Aid, from his testimonial match fund to ensure that St Cuthberts Care could complete the building's transformation on schedule, exactly one year to the day after his last game.

The Centre has welcomed thousands of disabled children and adults and their families over the last seven years to use the specially designed facilities and activities. Thanks to funding from the Alan Shearer Foundation use of the sensory rooms, hydrotherapy suite and equipment is now completely free.

"The activity centre has evolved over the years in response to the needs and requests of our users," says Centre Manager Jackie Dunn. "It costs around £120,000 per year to run the Activity Centre and in the past two years we have spent £230,000 upgrading and replacing specialist equipment."
