The Alan Shearer Foundation is saying a great big thank-you to everyone who took part in this weekend's Great North Run on behalf of the charity.

The Foundation had 12 athletes running in the iconic half marathon from Newcastle to South Shields in the year that saw the one millionth participant cross the finish line since the inaugural event in 1981.

"It was really hot this year," said Sarah Croft, who has taken part in every Great North Run but one in the last 18 years. "It was still good fun, though!" she added.

Sarah, the manager of St Cuthberts Care's Fostering North East, can be seen in the Chronicle Live's gallery of "The 38 best moments of the Great North Run weekend 2014" crossing the Tyne Bridge with a number six balloon. She said she thought she might be better spotted amongst the 56,000 participants holding the helium balloon which she got during her volunteering stint at the pasta party the day before.

"We're extremely grateful to all our Great North runners and to everyone who sponsored them," said the Foundation's Nicola Milne. "All the money raised will go to help maintain and develop facilities for disabled people and their families."
