We have been making new friends, quite literally, at a Newcastle City Council event this week.

The Local Offer exhibition at Newcastle Civic Centre was an event aimed at letting disabled young people and their families know about the services and facilities which are specifically available for them across the city.

At the St Cuthberts Care stand there was the opportunity to make your own "pet rock" while picking up information on the short breaks, therapeutic facilities and specialist residential services available at the Alan Shearer Centre.

Connor Lamb, and his teacher Miss Dawson, were amongst a group from Walbottle Campus attending the Local Offer information session who made their own stony-faced pals with inspiration from the Centre's recreation coordinator, Tom Parry.

Alan Shearer Centre manager, Amanda Head, said that the initiative, organised through the Newcastle Families Information Service, was a great opportunity to promote the Centre's range of facilities.

"It was a good forum in which to network, find out what people want and showcase what's available at the Centre", she said.

Anyone who was unable to come to the Civic Centre Local Offer event and would like more information about the Alan Shearer Centre can contact Amanda on 0191 267 8118 or email her at
